Students in the Veritas Christian Academy Chess Club participated in the 2011 NC State Chess Tournament held in Raleigh February 18-20. Neal Harris, who is a Lifetime Chess Master, was awarded the 2011 Carolina Chess Coach of the Year Award for the third consecutive year. Mr. Harris has instructed the Veritas Christian Academy Chess Club since 1998 and has been coaching chess players since 1982.

         Several of the Veritas Chess Club team members placed in the competition.

• Chad Moody, a fifth grader and son of Scott and Abeth Moody, won First Place in the K5 Division. Chad Moody is ranked first in the K5 Division for the state of NC, and he is also nationally ranked.
  
• Jennings Muniz placed third in the Chess Art Competition. Jennings is the daughter of Phillip and Becky Muniz and is in the fifth grade.
  
• VCA placed 4th in the K5 Team Division. Team members consisted of: Seth Baker, Anna Gardner, Zachary Jackson,Chad Moody, Jennings Muniz, Wouter van de Groep, and Dathan Witherspoon.
  
• VCA placed 11th in the K3 Team Division: Team consisted of: Luke Gardner, Miles Gardner, Sanford Gardner, Loren Holl, Bill van de Groep, and Klaas van de Groep.
