Matthew Baunack , Class of 2005
In a recent email, Matthew writes, "After graduation (from Berea College in December 2009), I decided to apply for WorldTeach, a nonprofit organization that partners with developing countries to provide teachers. I find myself writing to you from a computer now in the South Pacific! I was placed on Ofu, American Samoa. It is an island that is about three square miles of land mass attached to Olosega where I work teaching fifth through eighth grades. It truly is amazing here and my spoken Samoan is getting better. A lot of my kids don't speak much English but we are working through it. My classes are right next to the beach and soon I will be able to see the humpback whale migration from my desk. There are about three hundred people between the two small islands and they are such a kind people, truly showing the love of God. As in any developing area the students are in great need of materials such as things like books, paper, crayons, pencils, puzzles, chalk, and most other school supplies. The kids are really loving the books that I brought with me, like Percy Jackson and the Olympians, but they have almost gone through all of my books. I am having to be as creative as possible, for instance today I taught multiplication and division using pieces of coral! I'm certainly living and loving life."
Chris Gilpin , Class of 2005
