Shine On!

Matthew Baunack , Class of 2005

This is my last semester of classes at Berea College, and then I have two semesters of student teaching before I obtain my certification in Elementary Education.  I am enjoying my time in Kentucky running a vounteer program that matches volunteers with struggling students grades K-12.  I moved back into the dorms for this year, which brings some more social outlets, which is always great in the small town of Berea.  Life is great, and I am really enjoying it.

Alyssa Hansen, Class of 2006

I'm double majoring in International Development and International Economics at American University in Washington, DC. Going to school in the nation's capitol has been amazing. I'm exposed daily to great art, history, and science in the museums on the National Mall and the cultural opportunities offered around DC. But I've also become aware of the growing homeless population that lives on our streets. This past spring break I participated in an Alternative Break trip to-- DC!, where I slept on the streets near Chinatown for two nights, living in isolated groups with fellow students and actual homeless. I learned the lessons of poverty and of the streets- no one looks you in the eye when you are begging for change, all you think about is where your next meal is coming from, and you look out for other homeless like they're your true family. My Alt Break group also focused on housing and gentrification issues in DC. We met with local non-profits, homeless advocates, and the mayor's representatives to discuss the housing crisis amongst us. We also toured homeless shelters that the DC government is tearing down and selling to developers for major profits. Apart from the educational/humanitarian aspect of my trip, I got to spend a week bonding with people very different from myself. I was on a vegan diet, met anarchists, and had discussions on Christianity and pan-sexuality. This was an amazing experience in my life and I encourage all current Veritas students to challenge themselves after high school by seeking new experiences in uncomfortable situations.
