
Electives
During 8th period each day, Upper School students have the opportunity to participate in an exciting array of elective courses. Students may take one or two electives each year.
Electives for the 2009 - 2010 School Year
Advanced Physical Education - Instructor, Ricky Sayle
This particular elective course is offered in two separate sections - one for boys and one for girls. The course is designed to enhance skills and abilities through goal oriented weight training and conditioning.
Craft Class – Instructor, Ruth Vann
Students learn to knit, embroider, hand sew, make purses and bags, and jewelry.
Drama – Instructor, Becky Stone
Theatre Veritas provides an outstanding opportunity for our students to learn the history and art of the dramatic arts. Students enrolled in this elective present a Shakespearean play in the fall of each year and a musical in the spring. See the Performing Arts section under Student Life for more details and photos.
Fencing – Instructor, Burt Cook
Students learn the history of sword play, training, tactics, and all the basics. You will truly learn that fencing is fun!
First Person Nature – Instructor, Pat Stone
This elective course allows students to experience nature at its best. Students enrolled in this elective gain hands-on experience in dealing with many aspects of nature such as planting, caring for plants, building a fire, trail building, camping, water rafting, and many other fun adventures.
Flute
Students who enroll in the Flute Elective will receive instruction (basic to advanced) on the instrument including breathing, vibrato, rhythm, air speed, style, etc. The students will have the opportunity to play for VCA events.
Guitar
In this elective, students will choose to play either an acoustic guitar or an electric guitar. The instructor teaches to the student level (basic to advanced). Students are instructed in contemporary music, contemporary Christian music, classical music, country music –in other words, the style any student would love.
High School Chorus - Instructor, Debbie Stansell
This elective course provides an opportunity for students to study and perform choral literature from a variety of stylistic periods, genres, and cultures appropriate for high school vocal development. The High School Chorus
performs at numerous Veritas Christian Academy events. This elective provides the pportunity for students to develop skill in individual vocal development and in ensemble singing.
Middle School Art – Instructor, Jennifer Edwards
Students learn skill in drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, collage, sculpture, and multimedia projects as they learn the elements of art and principals of design through hands-on artwork and demonstration.
Middle School Performing Arts - Instructor, Debbie Stansell
This course is for Middle School students who are interested in performance. It is a beginning level course designed to prepare students for more advanced dramatic productions. The students in this elective will perform in Lessons and Carols, the Spring Musical, and other productions as time allows.
Newspaper – Instructor, Keith Pruitt
High School students have the opportunity to report on Veritas Christian Academy activities and events, write meaningful editorials, and convey the interests and accomplishments of Veritas students.
Praise Band - Instructor, Keith Pruitt
Students who enroll in this elective can take advantage of this opportunity to learn and enjoy contemporary praise songs to lead their peers in worship during chapel. These students will also have the opportunity to perform at various school events.
Studio Art – Instructor, Elisa Petree
This course is designed for High School students who want to take their art skills to a higher level. This class will explore many different art mediums and expressions.
Video Production – Instructor, Travis Gamelin
In this elective, students have the opportunity to learn both the technical aspects of video productions as well as the “power” of presenting a meaningful message in a clear way. This is a hands-on elective in which each student experiences planning, writing, shooting, editing, and directing his or her own creative projects.
Wrestling - Instructor, Michael Moore
Boys who participate in the wrestling elective will have the opportunity to learn both folk (NCAA) and free (Olympic)-style wrestling. The elective will be held during 8th period, but practice will continue after school for those who are interested in learning and training at a higher level. Students will have the opportunity to train sufficiently so that they can compete in local competitions.
Yearbook – Instructor, Sharon Madison
High School students have the opportunity to design, layout, and create the school yearbook. This is a hands-on class utilizing photography, design, and computer software.
